John Pearce is notably a landscape painter, on a fairly large scale, who works on the spot. He studied painting and stained glass at Hornsey College of Art from 1960, latterly at University of Newcastle through to 1964, and taught full-time 1964–84. His work was included in the 1962 Young Contemporaries show at RBA; was the subject of three solo shows while teaching between 1972–6; in 1980 was a prizewinner in the Greater London Council Spirit of London Exhibition, one of his pictures being bought for Guildhall collection; and in 1982 his painting of the Australian spiritual teacher Barry Long was chosen for the John Player Award Exhibition at National Portrait Gallery. In 2004 his oil study, 'Clement's Garden' was exhibited in Tate Britain's exhibition 'Art of the Garden'.
