22 x 41 cm
Initialled in pencil and bearing a gallery stamp
Glazed frame
Provenance: By descent from Douglas Shepherd (1922-1989), a designer and architect working on public houses for the brewery firm Ind Coope. He was heavily influenced by and was a serious collector of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including leading designers and artists such as Charles Ashlee and Jessie M King. He assembled a large collection from the 1950s to 1970s. His book collection was subsequently sold through Sotheby’s and in 2013 his magnificent silver collection by Archibald Knox and others was sold through these rooms.
The presence of a rubber stamp on an Edward Stott pastel indicates that the work is likely a studio piece or a study from the artist's estate, as this was a common method for cataloguing and authenticating works after his death.
Edward Stott (1855–1918), a British painter known for his impressionistic landscapes and rural scenes, often used pastels and charcoal for studies. Works from his estate, particularly those not signed by the artist himself, were frequently marked with a formal "studio stamp" to verify their provenance and include them in posthumous sales or exhibitions, such as the memorial exhibition held at the Rochdale Art Gallery in 1920.
The stamp is usually in the lower corner of the artwork and may read "Edward Stott ARA" or similar text, sometimes under the mount. This practice provides a traceable history for the artwork, linking it back to the artist's collection even without his personal signature.
